The Aroma of Ripe Shou Pu-erh Tea

Before you drink any slip of tea, the first thing you will notice must be the fragrance of tea. Among all those tea types out there, Pu-erh Tea always comes with a unique, complicated aroma—the aroma of Pu-erh Tea changes over time, temperature, and storage.

Today, we are going to discuss some familiar aromas found in Ripe Pu-erh Tea. If you are a Pu-erh Tea lover, you must smell these aromas before!

Aged Aroma 陈香
We can say that "Aged Aroma" is the typical, prominent aroma of most Ripe Pu-erh Tea. This smell might be similar to those old, wooden furniture but is more lively. With this smell, you can feel the sense of time implant in every Pu-erh Tea, the time where the Pu-erh Tea is fermenting and waiting for being brewed.

Jujube Aroma枣香
Some of the Ripe Pu-erh Tea might contain the jujube aroma, the smell of sweet, dried jujube with some sense of wood fragrance. It is also a classic fragrance that occurs when the tea contains both wooden and sugar aroma. When the sugar aroma hits on a specific value, the jujube aroma appears naturally with wood scent.

Camphor Aroma樟香

The ripe and raw Pu-erh Tea made with Yunnan Big Leaf Tree in the Spring season often comes with a Camphor smell. But the aroma is weak to be told clearly. After the tea being stored for a certain period, the Camphor aroma becomes more and more stronger. At that time, the Camphor aroma can be taste and smell obviously. It is calm, tastes smooth and comfortable.

Ginseng Aroma参香

The components of Pu-erh Tea's aroma are quite similar to ginseng. For example, they both contain palmitic acid with earthy flavor and farnesene with a woody flavor. In addition to these substances, the composition of the ginseng aroma in Pu'er tea also comes with noticeable woody scent and sweet aroma.
